Synopsis
In an imperial court in ancient China, it has been a few months since a 17-year-old girl known as Maomao was kidnapped and forced to work as a low-level servant at the emperor's palace. Still, she manages to retain her curious and pragmatic spirit, planning to work until her years of servitude are over. One day, however, she catches wind of the fact that the emperor's two infants have fallen gravely ill. She decides to secretly take action, drawing on her experience as a pharmacist raised in the poor red-light district.

Despite Maomao's attempts to remain anonymous, she soon catches the eye of Jinshi, an influential eunuch who recognizes her talents. Maomao soon finds herself in the emperor's inner court, where she gradually makes a name for herself by utilizing her knowledge and eccentric personality to solve various medical mysteries.

This show starts off with three episodes today, and this will continue into the winter season for a total of 24 episodes.

Episode 1

To start things off, it goes to show that hard work does pay off. Maomao is a hard-working girl from the boonies who was kidnapped from her village and forced to serve as a slave in the emperor's palace. While just being a lowly servant, her medicinal knowledge saved the emperor's son by relaying the message on a piece of cloth torn from her skirt to not use that white powder. And in return, she becomes the lady-in-waiting. Things didn't exactly go as planned as Maomao would have been fine by remaining anonymous, but now she's about to become much bigger than that. Great way to start things off as the light novel this show is based of is amazing.

Episode 2

Times were really tough back in the day when it comes to trust as it's all too easy to feed poisoned food to somebody. But it's a great thing Maomao has built up resistance to poison as not only can she tell if something is poisoned, but taste-testing it won't get her affected. Quite a handy skill that's hard to come by as Maomao is slowly getting used to her new role that she never thought she would ever get. Pretty amusing when the cat ears pop out.

Episode 3

And now, an episode centered around mystery regarding the concubine Fuyou as she's named after a flower that's white during the day and pink at night. She claimed to be sleepwaking as she danced in the moonlight. But this was all just a fraud as it turns out that Fuyou is still a virgin and Fuyou is childhood friends with one of the generals. This episode felt like Raven of the Inner Palace, but without the supernatural stuff as this was a mystery that only somebody with Maomao's line of reasoning could crack, and that last line Maomao said pretty much sums it all up that love makes the woman beautiful.

So with that, I must say that this show has been every bit as great as I am expecting it to be as character development has been strong, and Maomao shows that she can be useful unlike anybody else could. But now, she's about to face some troubling times ahead.

Maomao must really want to live a more reserved lifestyle, but she keeps getting brought into the spotlight. And Jinshi really likes her rejecting all his advances.

Oh, I like this. A good story with good main characters and good voice actors. It really stands out from the crowd, and my lineup is pretty crowded this season.

It's even educational.

Episode 4

This is why it's important to have trusted servants who will adapt with the situation. Lihua's ladies-in-waiting thought nothing of it and tried to prevent Maomao from doing her job that was given from the emperor himself. As it turns out, not only were they inept in treating her seeing that she couldn't handle her usual meal, but they caused her to illness as they used toxic makeup on her only caring about her looking great and not giving any thought about why that makeup was banned. This empire is doomed if ladies like them are running the place, but it's a good thing common sense won out in the end.

When I saw apothecary in the title I figured it would be like those other 'cutesy' type shows that have come out recently with that in title and, since I didn't care for those, skipped this. I saw some screen shots of this though and thought it looked different enough from those to give it a try. Glad I did. It's one of the best shows I've seen so far this season.

I get Ghibli vibes from this, which is understandable. I get reminded of Avatar too, must be the resemblance to the earth kingdom.

So how did that dancing concubine manage to get up on the walls?

I keep waiting for her to try and get some kind of message to her father to at least let him know she's OK. Poor guy.

Episode 5

Maomao goes foraging, and snagging some of the prized matsutakes. And then she's invited to the garden party hosted by the concubine Gyokuyou, all while she's trying to find a cure for those with burn scars on their wrists. As for Maomao's freckles, they are fake as she does so to make herself unappealing to kidnappers. I have a feeling something's going to happen as that last scene is pretty ominous.

"I'm sorry you were kidnapped and we can't police that"

Yes you can...easily. If the girl comes in unconscious or bound and gagged, she was likely kidnapped. Is letting a family sell off their daughter much better than kidnappers doing it??

At least ask the girl if she is wiling to work there. Take her aside, away from the people there selling her. Explain to her that if it is her family selling her, that if she refuses, there will likely be nowhere for her to go back to, but at the palace she will be expected to work, but she will also get clothed, fed and housed, if she is really pretty she may even have a chance to live much better than she does as a peasant. If she tells them the sellers are not her family, arrest them for kidnapping.

Or did he only care that she was kidnapped because he started to like her?

Probably this. Maomao mentions in the first episode that servant girls are expendable, so the palace likely doesn't care how they get them. But now that Jinshi has taken an interest in her, he wants to make sure she gets preferential treatment.

Episode 6

The garden party is on, and things are starting to evolve into a proxy war, and it turns out that Lishu became a concubine at age 9. And then comes the moment where Maomao taste-tests the consort's soup, and it is poisonous. Of course, Maomao has built up resistance to poison, but even so she needed to spit it out. As it turns out, Lihua and Gyokuyo had their meals switched, and it was one of Gyokuyo's food tasters who did it. Lishu's rash after eating something she's allergic to said it all. This goes to show that everybody has their own dietary restrictions and what might be perfectly normal for one person is poisonous for another as Maomao showed.

Lihua's ladies-in-waiting are really fearful of Maomao now. During the garden party, Maomao notices Lishu's and Gyokuyou's dishes were switched, and that Lishu is allergic to fish. But one of Gyokuyou's dishes was poisoned as well, so the intrigue continues to build up.

What is this "hidden meaning" implied by the hairpins? Maomao is starting to become very popular. And it is regrettable that even today there will always be people who refuse to believe someone could be deathly allergic to something.

@paulchaested My question is more that...if it is so frequent, why not have dedicated cooks for all of the high ranking concubines? Why is the food changing hands so much before it gets to the concubines? If they all have dedicated cooks, then those cooks know what they like, or what they can't eat and if the food is poisoned...then there's pretty much only one possible culprit.

@paulchaested Assassination attempts were very much rampant in ancient China. Everyone was targeted, including emperors. There were a lot of violent political maneuvering in those dynasties.

One of the most infamous example is Empress Lu (first empress of the Han Dynasty). After her emperor husband died, she ordered many assassinations to consolidate power; including other concubines and their families. Her own son, the emperor, was so horrified by her behavior that he drowned himself in pleasure and ignored his duties. Essentially, she became the actual ruler of China for over 15 years. The constant killings built up a lot of resentment that, after she died, her entire clan was completely exterminated.

Episode 7

While Maomao is given the day off, she just doesn't feel alive unless she's working. Continuing the investigation, Maomao reveals the fingerprints on the silver bowl to show who touched it. And her hairpin collection is grown as she gets another one, and now has four of them. Afterwards, she leaves the palace, makes a stop in town, and then heads back to her home in the farmlands. Pretty chill episode that was as pretty much, Maomao earned her break and needed to let her old man know what happened since she was kidnapped at the beginning.

So now Maomao is a CSI. And the hairpins from the party are her ticket out of the rear palace so she can finally go home, even if it is only temporarily. Although, I feel there's more to the meaning behind the hairpins than how she used it to her advantage. Plus, Maomao's father's remark at the end suggests he had his own experiences with the rear palace somehow.

Episode 8

While Maomao has returned home, her work as an apothecary doesn't take a break, and she's also dealing with some guy who has done a lot of horrible things, but is using his father's influence to get what he wants. Some girl was trying to kill him, but Maomao stops her. What appears to be a double-suicide, Maomao figures out that it was actually a murder as that guy was in cahoots with a woman who used a double-layered drink where the tester wouldn't taste the poisoned drink to not raise suspicion. That was an interesting mystery there, and it's something that only an apothecary could figure out. So with that, it's back to the capital where Maomao breaks Jinshi's teacup in a lighthearted moment.

Seems like everyone at that brothel was in on the attempted murder of that customer. The servant girl's sister died because of the customer's actions, and she tried to kill him herself. The courtesan who poisoned him was very deliberate in making it look like a double suicide, and even the head of the brothel paid hush money to Maomao's dad to sweep this whole incident under the rug.

It was funny seeing Jinshi shocked like that. He obviously wanted Maomao to ask him to escort her out, but I'm guessing the passing of hairpins is the equivalent of asking someone out on a date.

Episode 9

And now, Maomao is tasked with what happened that caused Kounen, who has a reputation for being an alcoholic, to die. He suddenly developed a sweet tooth and suddenly indulged on sweet stuff as it turns out that Kkounen lost his taste for salt. And then consuming salt when he least expected to caused all sorts of problems. So after solving that case, Maomao is given some booze, but of course she's too young to drink. After that, another mystery as a lady was found dead after being dragged out of the moat. Given the circumstantial evidence it's a suicide, but seeing her fingers all red that she thinks it was a murder. After that, Maomao makes a request to Jinshi that if she were to be executed, it would be through poison, and while Jinshi would never consider it, Maomao's commoner status says otherwise. This goes to show that there's a lot of bad blood going on, and those bad guys are clever to make what was actually a murder look like a suicide, but only somebody like Maomao can figure that out.

So did I understand correctly that the other dudes didn't mean to actually poison the guy? They were just adding salt to his drink to prank him (like at my office where putting salt in the sugar dispenser by the coffee machine was common) and when he didn't spit it out and yell for big laffs they figured they needed to add more salt?

Salt's a pretty good emetic as it is; surprised the guy didn't just barf it all up, even if he couldn't taste it.

So Lishu can't handle honey as she has some pretty strict dietary restrictions. And that leads to Maomao's next mystery to uncover, and in particular the honey from Fengming's place. After some thinking and digging around, Maomao figures out that a bunch of herbs and flowers were removed, and that Maomao's father Luomen had something to do with it as he was once employed at the inner palace. Lots of interesting intel was dug up here as Luomen knows something that he's not telling, all while Lishu keeps on getting the short end of the stick.

Jinshi sends Maomao to observe Fengming at Ah-Duo's pavilion, and there is definitely some intrigue surrounding her. So Maomao's father did work at the rear palace earlier in his life. And Lishu may also be allergic to honey, but that look of dread when Maomao mentioned Fengming's name goes way beyond fear of any exposure to allergens.

That baby was born 17 years ago, Lishu wasn't around yet. Fengming might simply dislike her because she's the youngest concubine and, since Ah-Duo is the oldest, she sees Lishu as a threat. Maomao also mentioned that Lishu is looked down on by some as being disloyal to the previous emperor since she's become the current emperor's concubine too.

and then a Doctor gets thrown out, allowing him to take a female infant with him without anyone looking
